Before Outerstellar Innerspace was ever conceived, before it was even a radio show (yes it was a radio show ran by the same heads that now release its music), there was a tiny crew of beatmakers and lyricists that went by the name of Mentillstate. These were the basement days, where skills were honed and art was created for one another only. The Matrameru project was a collaborative effort of the participants of Mentillstate at the bottom half of that incarnation. The Sandglass album was the culmination at that point of their path to merge boombap hip-hop and psychedelia. The album goes quite beyond its production aesthetic though. A concept record about time, it is filled with heady complex lyricism and weighty ideas. It is the sole official document of that window, and offers a glimpse back at the creative development of what are now Outerstellar Innerspace's core artists. Perhaps this is what it always was meant to be, a moment in time.
